Banks or Charles Stross. Check them out - Wasp Factory and "Culture" novels from Banks (starting with Consider Phlebas, Player of Games, and Use of Weapons) and "Laundry Files" novels from Stross (starting with Atrocity Archives). And, since you seem to like classics, have you ever heard of Master and Margarita, by Bulgakov?
